Font Licensing

Who should buy fonts, designer or client?

Anyone who use the fonts must purchase a license. Clients who will use the fonts for advertising or as part of their visual identity must purchase a license even if they do not install the fonts.

Can you explain Blackletra’s licensing model?

At blackletra.com we offer crossmedia licenses that cover Desktop, Web and App at the same time. There is no way to purchase desktop licenses or webfont licenses separately at this site. We have one multi-purpose EULA covering those uses, including Trial fonts use. For other specific uses such as video games, films, TV/series or to embed the fonts in hardware/software (OEM), a specific license must be acquired. We believe that this makes licensing easy and simple for you, but if you need something special please do not hesitate to contact us.

What is Blackletra's basic EULA?

It is a “Crossmedia” license, so it allows you or your client to use the fonts on Desktop, Web and Apps. For other specific uses such as video games, films, TV/series or to embed the fonts in hardware/software (OEM), a specific license must be acquired.

Choosing your license

How do I know which license to buy?

You just have to indicate the number of employees of the Licensing organization. If you are a freelancer, you can buy a license for 1 employee. If your client will also use the fonts or if the fonts will be part of the client’s visual identity, they need to purchase a license as well.

After purchasing a basic license, will I be able to use the fonts for anything?

No. To use in video games, films, TV/series, to embed the fonts in hardware/software (OEM) or to use in logos for companies with more than 500 employees, a special license is required. Please contact us by email: info@blackletra.com

How many computers can I install the fonts on?

You can install the fonts on the number of computers needed to meet the number of employees in the licensing company.

My client has 250 employees but will only install the fonts on 15 computers. What license do they need to buy?

They need to buy a license for 250 employees, regardless of how many computers they will install.

My client is a Startup, what license should they buy?

They must purchase a license based on the number of employees they have today. If they grow in the future, they must contact us by email to purchase a license upgrade.

Limitations

Can I share the fonts with my client or contractor?

If you licensed the fonts, no. The client must license the fonts if they need to use/install the fonts. If the client wants to share fonts with external collaborators, they need to purchase an Add-on to their license, please email us in such cases: info@blackletra.com

My client has purchased a license and wants to be able to send the fonts to external collaborators, is it possible?

In order for your client to be able to do this, they must purchase a license addendum. Please ask your client to send us an email: info@blackletra.com

I worked as a designer in a studio. Can I continue to use the fonts the studio has purchased?

No. You could use it while you were an employee, now you need to purchase your own licenses.

Can I purchase a license and modify the fonts by myself?

You can’t modify the fonts by yourself but you can hire us to do that for you, please email us explaining your needs: info@blackletra.com

Can I purchase a license and hire a third party to modify the fonts?

No.

I am a student and do not have money to purchase fonts but want to use yours, what can I do?

Renting the fonts for a small fraction of the retail price on Fontstand App is the best option for you. At Fontstand you can also test the fonts for free for 3 hours. You can also use our Trial fonts on educational projects. A license must be purchased when the fonts are going to be used on commercial projects.

Can I buy a license for my client?

Yes. You can add a license owner during the checkout process.

Can I embed fonts in a .pdf?

Yes but public .pdf files may only be created if the font is embedded in such a way that the reader is restricted from changing its embedding permissions, extracting the font from the document, and creating or editing new content using the fonts. This is because a substantial part of the font source code is embedded into a document when creating .pdf files.

What about ePUB licenses?

Clients can use our fonts in electronic publications so long as they have stated the size of the licensing organization correctly, measured in number of employees. Please check our EULA.

Can you create a special license to my specific needs?

Sure, email us and tell us what you need: info@blackletra.com
