About this font
In Garamont’s footsteps
By Emerson Eller
This typeface is the result of work started between 2018 and 2019 during the Expert class Type design course held at the Museum Plantin-Moretus in Antwerp, Belgium.
From the initial research in the Plantin-Moretus collection, I was particularly interested in sets of matrices or punches that were incomplete, fragmented, and highlighted in the inventory with hesitant annotations or suppositions about their authorship. I think these sets attracted attention because, like many other well-known pieces, they also highlight the excellence of Renaissance typography, although they may not receive the same distinction as other widely recognized artifacts. Furthermore, dealing with a fragmented object of study would allow more space for research and interpretation – elements that I enjoy exploring in my work.
In this context, I was fascinated by the characteristics of the set of matrices Mediane Romaine, which, in the inventory of the Plantin-Moretus collection, is described as "a beautiful face, sixteenth century French in style, resembling but not the same as the Median Romain used by Garamont in the books published with Barbé in 1545, apparently not used by Plantin; deserving of detailed study."
